Jogger attacked in Cameron Park, police search for suspect

Waco police are looking for a male suspect who tried to sexually assault a woman early Monday morning.  They're calling him a "bold thug."

The suspect is described as a 5 foot 9 White or Hispanic man in his mid to late 20s, who weighs about 160 pounds and has short black hair. The man was wearing a white t-shirt and black pants at the time of the attack.

It happened around 6:50 a.m. Monday morning in the Pecan Bottoms area of Cameron Park, near University Parks Dr. and Herring Ave.  Police say this is statistically a safe area, with a lot of people, park rangers and officers nearby.

Police say a woman was running in Cameron Park and stopped for a drink of water at a water fountain outside of a restroom facility. She was approached from behind by a man who hit her several times in the head.

The suspect injured the woman after he pushed her against a brick building with metal doors. The woman began screaming and fighting back.

A couple walking on the Herring Avenue Bridge heard the screams. The suspect fled the scene after the couple came to help the woman.

Waco Police Sergeant Patrick Swanton says, "She put up a heck of a fight and was able to make him flee.  The suspect took off.  She was screaming and hollering doing everything, the right things, she needed to do to get him away from her."

The victim was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center with possible head injuries.  Police say she is physically doing ok, just shaken up.

If anyone has any information about the attacker, please call Waco Police at (254) 750-7500.
