Grand Jury clears U.S. Marshal in local shooting

A Grand Jury has cleared a U.S. Marshal of shooting a wanted McLennan County man on March 18.

30-year-old Transcini Richerson was wanted for assault strangulation and family violence. The U.S. Marshal Lone Star Fugitive Task Force found him sitting in a vehicle on the 2600 block of Cumberland Avenue.

According to police, when officers approached the vehicle to arrest Richerson, he ignored orders to show his hands. The suspect continued to ignore police and started reaching in a downward motion. One of the U.S. Deputy Marshals fired his weapon in self-defense.

McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna released a statement about the Grand Jury's decision.

"We agree with the Grand Jury's resolution on this matter. Deputy U.S. Marshal Clayton Brown's conduct was within the confines of the law and his training. There are times when the use of deadly force by an officer is necessary to protect themselves as well as fellow officers. This was one of those instances."
