FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) - The first witnesses in the trial of Army psychiatrist accused in the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood have been employees of a gun store in nearby Killeen.

Maj. Nidal Hasan bought guns and ammunition used in the attack at the store known as Guns Galore.

But Hasan, who is acting as his own lawyer at his trial, chose not to cross examine any of the initial witnesses as testimony got under way Tuesday.

In his brief opening statement to the jury, Nidal referenced his Muslim religion and said he was among imperfect Muslims trying to establish the perfect religion. He also apologized for mistakes he made in that endeavor. He said evidence clearly would show he's the shooter but that wouldn't tell the whole story.
