Woman arrested for starting local apartment fire

Posted:
WACO -

An arrest has been made for the early morning fire at a local apartment leasing office that destroyed one building over the weekend.

Susan Kay Turnipseed has been charged with arson. She was arrested around 7 p.m. Monday night after it was determined that the fire at The Colony Apartments was an arson.

An arrest affidavit says Turnipseed, a disgruntled resident, tried to cover the complex's security cameras with a plastic bag as she set the building on fire.

Authorities were able to get a warrant for Turnipseed's arrest after they reviewed the security tape. One firefighter was injured in the fire and officials say that will upgrade her charge.

Waco firefighters responded to the fire at The Colony Apartments around 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

When they arrived they found the rental office was engulfed. Crews were able to contain the fire to just the rental office before it could spread to the apartments.

Colony resident Geoff Modisette says he was inside his apartment when the fire must have started.

"It smelled like burning metal kind of. So I looked out the balcony and saw smoke coming up," said Modisette. "So I ran around to the office which is right there and there was a fire starting at the door. By the time me and one other person got the fire extinguisher it was too big to put out."
