Local group marches for change

A new local group in Waco is working to change the image of African Americans in the community. Saturday nearly two dozen people marched in Waco.

In light of the George Zimmerman trial, the group, Black Men Standing was formed.

Members say there's been too much negativity surrounding black Americans and they want to show that not all African Americans are thugs or in jail. They want to promote "every day black me who stand up in their homes, communities and careers."

Black Men Standing Supporter, LaCurtis Jones says it's a call for change.

"To be honest, all black folks need to stick together and stop this black on black crime said Jones. "It's very important to show how strong black men and women are to help out our society for our children growing up."

McLennan County Commissioner Lester Gibson spoke at the rally before the march. He says, even though not many people turned out, they can still make a difference.

"I think the peaceful march with a few is good, you know regardless. Maybe we keep on and get the awareness and we'll get people out here," said Gibson.

Saturday was just the first of many planned marches. The group plans to hold others in Temple, Austin and San Antonio and they hope it catches on.
