Man steals sheriff's vehicle after leading police on high speed chase

A wanted man stole a Bell County Sheriff's vehicle after he led authorities on a high speed chase in Bell County Thursday afternoon.

Joshua Maldonado Reyes was booked into the Bell County Jail on Thursday.

The Bell County Task Force Unit tried to pull Reyes over on a routine stop just after 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon on I-35. Reyes refused to pull over and sped off. He then headed towards the town of Pendleton, north of Temple.

Reyes stopped at his home in Pendleton, got out of his car and ran around the house. A Bell County Sheriff's Deputy got out of his vehicle and started to chase him down, but tripped in a hole in the backyard and fell. Reyes then jumped into the Bell County Sheriff's truck and drove off.

Police continued to chase the driver and an undercover Temple police truck was able to force Reyes off the road near 6th and Southerland.

The Temple police truck that forced Reyes off the road, crashed into some tall grass. The muffler set the grass on fire and the Temple police truck was destroyed.

Reyes was taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple with minor injuries, but no one other injuries were reported. He was then booked into the Bell County Jail.

The Bell County vehicle received only minor damage to the tail light.

A search warrant was executed at Reyes' home in Pendleton. An estimated $42,000 worth of meth was recovered at his home. Reyes was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals in Waco.

He is being held for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.

Shaun Lerma Reyes was at the scene and was found to have warrants unrelated to this incident and police took him into custody.
