Suspected car burglar arrested after two hour manhunt

A suspected car burglar is in McLennan County Jail after he ran away from police and led them on a two hour manhunt on Tuesday.

James Howerton is charged with six counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, felony possession of control substance, possession of control substance over 4 grams and evading arrest on foot.

Police were looking for Howerton because he was wanted for five counts of burglary of motor vehicle and felony possession of control substance. A Bellmead Police Officer spotted Howerton walking in the 1600 block of Air Base Road in Bellmead on Tuesday.

The officer called for additional units to assist. Howerton then began to run through a nearby wooded field to avoid capture for his outstanding warrants.

After a two hour manhunt, Howerton was found at a house attempting to take a vehicle out of a driveway. Howerton again fled on foot after officers moved in to get him, but was captured shortly after.

Bellmead Police got assistance from the Lacy Lakeview Police Department, TSTC Police Department, McLennan County Sheriff's department, Waco Police Department, DPS and U.S. Marshals in the manhunt for Howerton.

Police are still investigating the burglary of motor vehicle cases in the Waco area. James is currently on parole for burglary of habitation.
