Three Dallas men in custody after stealing ATM from local hotel

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

Three men are being held in Ellis County Jail after leading authorities on a high speed chase on I-35 after they stole an ATM from a local hotel Monday night.

According to police, the three men stole an ATM from the Hilton Hotel in the 100 block of University Parks Dr. late Monday night at around 11:45 p.m.

James Andre Smith, Charles Ray Harris Jr. and Joshua Datrun Thompson have been charged with theft. All three men are from Dallas and have criminal records.

Police say a fourth man was inside the Hilton Hotel watching television. He opened a locked door and let three men in. All three of the men where wearing hoods.

Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton says the thieves came prepared.

"You know obviously this was somewhat thought out. They had a dolly with them and were able to go to the ATM that was in the lobby," said Swanton.

The men grabbed an ATM that was not secured to the floor and fled the building. They loaded the ATM into a white van and fled towards I-35. The white van had been stolen from Padgitt's Store on Franklin Ave.

Padgitt's Manager, Ed Rolan says he couldn't believe it when he found out about the theft the next morning.

"At first I thought they were kidding because that's just something that I never imagined was going to happen," said Rolan.

The fourth suspect left the scene in a separate vehicle and police are trying to find him.

"We have a description of that vehicle and we're in the process of trying to determine who that person is," said Swanton.

After a broadcast about the incident, a West Police Officer spotted the suspect's van heading northbound on I-35 and gave chase.

McLennan County deputies joined in the chase as the van continued into Hill County. DPS troopers and Hill County deputies assisted in the chase and a DPS trooper was able to spike the tires of the van just south of Waxahachie.

The three men bailed out of the van and fled on foot. Police were able to catch the three men and they are currently being held in Ellis County Jail.

The van and the ATM were recovered.
