Small child found wandering near busy street in Waco, mother arrested

Waco police have arrested a Bellmead woman for abandoning her 2-year-old son. He was found wandering near a busy street in Waco Monday morning.

A passerby noticed the child near 7th and La Salle around 8 a.m. Monday morning. Police were sent to the scene and found the child. The child was very dirty, hungry and thirsty. Officers bought the boy food, changed his diaper and changed his soiled clothes.

27-year-old Stephanie Renee Stocks of Bellmead, was later arrested for child abandoning/endangering of the child found by police.

Police investigated and found a van in the 700 block of Oakwood with indicators the child had been in it. Police received a call of an individual down at the convenience store located in the 300 block of La Salle.

Police found the boy's mother at the convenience store, where she was passed out from what she told officers was heavy drug use.

The child was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center for examination. He is being treated for various needs, including cuts and scratches and what appears to be burn marks from cigarettes and a severe case of diaper rash.

Child Protective Service was notified and the child is now with CPS.
