Trial for 15-year-old murder case postponed

Posted:
MCLENNAN COUNTY -

The trial for a 15 year old Waco murder case is now being postponed until September 23.

James Earl Williams plead not guilty on July 22 to the June 12, 1998 murder of 17-year-old Darren Eugene Lang.

Williams' defense team says that the murder charge was dropped as part of a plea deal made in 2002. Judge Matt Johnson told the jury to come back Monday morning. This decision was made to give the 10th Court of Appeals time to consider the matter.

Judge Matt Johnson decided to postpone the trial until September because Williams' attorneys have yet to file the paperwork with the 10th Court of Appeals.

A jury of 10 women and 2 men were seated Monday in 54th District Court to hear the case that had not been prosecuted because the paperwork had been misplaced. Opening statements will begin Tuesday morning.

Waco PD had delivered the case to the District Attorney's office back in the late 90s, but the case was never set for prosecution. It was not until new District Attorney Abel Reyna took office that the case was found in a file cabinet.

His staff and investigators looked into it and submitted the case to a grand jury. An indictment was the obtained for the case.

Williams was serving a federal drug sentence when he was served with the murder indictment. He still has time left to serve on the federal drug charge.

Police say Darren Eugene Lang was shot and killed near 4th and Clay in Waco on June 12, 1998. Waco PD said the car Lang was a passenger in, was being chased by two suspects in another vehicle.

According to police, the driver of the car Lang was in, was headed to the Waco police station to get help.
