Soldiers could be cheated by one property management company

KILLEEN -

Complaints pile up against a property management company in Killeen.

Team Lupe LLC and Town Line Properties have had several renters and owners file complaints. The Texas Real Estate Commission says they currently have 13 open cases against the companies, who share the same broker.

Nakita Wallace is an Army instructor who now lives in Virginia. She still owns a four bedroom home in Killeen which she rents to families. She also contracts Town Line Properties to manage rent and take care of maintenance issues. Wallace says Town Line has charged her for problems that weren't fixed and have not been giving her the rent paid by the families.

"Something needs to be done to them they need to go to jail for what they're doing. This is fraud, you're saying that you're fixing stuff that you're not fixing," Wallace said over the phone.

Wallace says she's now out of $10,000, and she can't leave. When she tried to stop doing business with them, Wallace says Town Line would charge her $3,600. This while she's paying mortgage payments and supporting four children.

"So I'm paying my mortgage in Killeen and I'm still having to provide for me and my four children in Virginia, just imagine how hard that is," Wallace said.

Another soldier in Copperas Cove says the company also cheated him out of thousands. He says while he was renting his home while he was away, the company would charge him for repairs on his home. However, when he came back those repairs either never happened or were not near as extensive as described. He also says they charged him $600 to replace three sprinkler heads.

The Better Business Bureau has also heard a number of complaints about Team Lupe. The BBB says Team Lupe has received an "F" rating.

"There are over 25 complaints on the company in the last three years, covering a broad spectrum of issues from billing issues, contract issues, maintenance issues. So it would be a business that you would want to be very careful with," BBB spokesperson Helen Moore said.

The Real Estate Commission also says Town Line Properties is unlicensed. Officials say that is okay under state law as long as you only cover maintenance issues and do not conduct real estate business. The commission says Town Line has applied for a license, but because of past dealings, the commission says they may not approve the license.

The Real Estate Commission is currently building a case against Team Lupe and Town Line Properties. Once they send a petition for each case, the companies can appeal them to an administrative judge.

For now though, Wallace just wants people to know her story and to warn them to be smart when choosing a property manager.

"I just hope no one goes through what I have to go through because it's not right," Wallace said.

News Channel 25 reached out to Town Line Properties to get their side of the story. We were told they would call us back. At this time we have received no response.
