Boil water order lifted for West after blast

WEST, Texas (AP) - Experts say it's now safe to drink water from all public supplies in a Central Texas town decimated nearly three months ago by a deadly fertilizer plant blast.

City officials in West on Tuesday rescinded the public boil water notice.

The April 17 blast claimed 15 lives, left about 200 people hurt and damaged water and sewer systems. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality cited numerous water main breaks in requiring residents to boil water before drinking.

West officials cited improved system pressure and chlorine levels in lifting the citywide boil water notice as of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The notice came the same day that Gov. Rick Perry asked federal officials to reconsider their denial of major disaster aid to West. Perry says the town sustained damage exceeding $35 million.
