Bell County Special Crimes Unit Targeting Sex Offenders Makes Progress

Posted:
BELTON -

The list of Bell County's registered sex offenders hasn't been updated in 20 years, and the Sheriff's Office introduced a new Special Crimes Unit to specifically get sex offenders in compliance with the law.

There are around 750 registered sex offenders in Bell County. With about 8 officials in the unit, including Lt. Michele Cianci who heads it, the unit conducts rounds where they go from door to door seeking the people who are on the list.

"We've conducted sex offender knock and talks to verify that many of these sex offenders say where they are living or they are employed where they say they are employees." said Cianci.

Since the unit started, several arrests have been made because of not being in compliance.

"We have individuals who do not comply for example who don't come in when they are supposed to," said Cianci. "Or we get information from the community who call in and say they have the information on that person but he or she does not live in the location."

The number of registered sex offenders throughout Texas is alarming with around 76,000. Compared to neighboring states with an average of 7,000 registered sex offenders.

A list of registered sex offenders near you can be viewed on the Texas DPS website. This helps the public and the Special Crimes Unit track down where sex offenders are supposed to be located.

"If you know their name, you can put there name or just the zip code," said Cianci. "If you just want to know many sex offenders live in your neighborhood you can know how many live in your area."
