Convenience store mobbed after fireworks show

Posted:
WACO -

A clerk is punched in the face after a mob of youths takes over a convenience store.

The Shop & Save on Elm Street was "swarmed" with nearly 60 young people shortly after 11:30 Thursday night. The owner of the store says the kids took over, stealing several things in the store. One of the clerks tried to restore order, but surveillance video shows him getting punched in the face by one of the customers.

That's when the store started to clear and the clerk is shown on the video holding a bag of ice to his cheek where he was hit. The owner says the man has a swollen cheek, but was not taken to the hospital.

Trey Cavezza, the owner of Jasper's Barbeque a few blocks away down Elm Street, says he's more aggravated by what happened instead of scared.

"It really upsets you to hear about it happening around, your neighbors," Cavezza said. "Local business owners kind of watch out for each other's businesses and properties just because it means a lot to us. We're a part of this community over here and we really try to watch out for each other."

The owner of Shop & Save also says he was about the close the store, but kept it open because of the amount of people coming in after the fireworks show. He did say the group of people are not from the surrounding neighborhood and he just wants the man who assaulted his clerk to be arrested.

Waco Police did respond to the store shortly after what happened, but no one has been arrested as of Friday afternoon. While they did have an increased presence on the street that night, police say it's tough to cover so many people over such a wide area.

The owner says last year after the fireworks, a mob of 200 people were outside his store.
