Increased PD presence in Waco street after fireworks

A SWAT truck and riot gear marks an extra police presence in one Waco street.

Waco police say last year Elm street, that reaches out just across the street from the Suspension Bridge, gave police some trouble. A group of young people toss around fireworks and pelted a SWAT truck with bricks and concrete. That's why this year, police are increasing their presence on the street by have an armored SWAT truck, riot gear and several squad cars.

Brad Strickland owns an ice cream truck on the corner of Elm St. and Martin Luther King Blvd. He says he's happy for an increased presence but has always felt safe.

"There's quite a bit of people that leave the fireworks show, walk across the suspension bridge and they walk down Elm and so they'll mingle around here for a while," Strickland said. "But then they start walking down Elm and yes if you were to stand at the end of Elm and look down at the end of the fireworks show, that street's packed and it's got quite a few people."

When asked if riot gear was appropriate, Strickland says he doesn't think so but it is good to be prepared. He also says when you get a group of young people in a large group together, there's likely going to be one person that wants to cause trouble.

One Waco officer was asked if they expect trouble Thursday night. He said no, they're out there just in case.
