Mart police raid convenience store seize 8 liners and cash

A McLennan County man is in jail after Mart police raided a Valero Ruby's Food Mart for running a gambling operation. Mart police raided the local gas station, off of West Texas Ave, just after 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

25-year-old Manjinder Singh was arrested and charged with keeping a place of gambling, gambling promotion and possession of gambling equipment. He was the nephew of the store owner.

Police seized two eight liner slot machines, more than $5,000 in cash along with some drug paraphernalia. Police had been investigating the store for nearly two months and had received more than 50 complaints from residents who had gambled away their entire paychecks.

Investigators say they found money stashed throughout the store because attendants emptied the machines twice a night collecting more than $3,000 each day.

Mart Police Chief David Monthey says because so many of his residents are low income shutting illegal gambling down is good for the community.

"Places like this put a carrot in front of their face and they have wishful thinking of that they can go in and possibly double their money and they end up losing their entire check and then have to suffer for the rest of the month," said Mart Police Chief David Monthey. "So maybe we can save a few people from losing their entire means of support inside the store."

Police say for now, the convenience store will remain closed down and that more charges will be filed once they can identify who the owner of the store is.
