Police arrest man in connection to Cameron shooting

A Cameron man has been arrested after he allegedly shot a Las Vegas man in OJ Thomas Park in Cameron on June 27. The shooting took place early Thursday morning after midnight in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Blvd.

23-year-old Barry Dean Garrett Jr. is in Milan County Jail and facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which is a 2nd degree felony.

Cameron police Chief Randy Dixon said 21-year-old Marion Cautrell Melton, from Las Vegas, was taken to Scott and White Hospital in Temple around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning because of a gunshot wound. He is still in the intensive care unit and in stable condition.

Cameron police were called out to OJ Thomas Park after 911 operators received calls of shots fired and ambulance needed for a shooting that had happened there.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw a crowd of people and one man laying in the street with a gunshot wound.

According to police, two rival groups got into an argument, when one person pulled out a weapon and fired multiple shots at Melton.

Melton was taken into surgery after he was taken to the hospital and he was being listed in critical condition.

The police had been called out to OJ Thomas Park two times earlier Wednesday night for disturbance with firearms, but police were unable to find anyone with firearms.

The police department does have a suspect for the shooting and is still investigating the case.
