Ex-soldier sentenced after killing neighbor

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) -

A former Fort Hood soldier has been sentenced to prison for killing his neighbor after intervening in a domestic dispute.

Twenty-five year-old Justin Cole Fletcher of Killeen, plead guilty to manslaughter Friday and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Sentencing had been delayed several times before but finally took place more than two years after the deadly shooting happened.

Fletcher shot and killed 23 year-old Anthony Duane Paxson back in may of 2011. They both lived at the same apartment complex on the 1300 block of Wales Drive in Killeen.

Law enforcement say the deadly shooting happened after Fletcher tried to stop a domestic fight between the victim and his wife.

Officials say the couple had been drinking and arguing the night of the shooting and had a history of domestic violence.

Investigators say Fletcher yelled at the couple living below him to be quite and when they didn't, he confronted Paxson and a shoving match ensued. That's when police say Fletcher went back to his apartment, grabbed his riffle and shot his neighbor.

Paxson was rushed to Metroplex Hospital where he died later that same night.
