Texas House takes up redistricting, abortion

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas House is entering the final stretch of the special legislative session, voting on redistricting and holding hearings on abortion and highway funding.

Lawmakers are expected to give final approval to the 2012 voting maps, giving Gov. Rick Perry the vote he wanted when he called the special session last month. Federal judges drew the maps as a temporary solution to a lawsuit filed by minority groups, who claim the House and Congressional versions are discriminatory.

Afterward, lawmakers will hear testimony on new controversial new restrictions on abortions and additional highway funding. Conservative Republicans are expected to embrace the abortion measures, but some oppose diverting money from the rainy day fund for roads and bridges.

Time is running out for lawmakers to pass all of the measures by Monday.
