Sam Jack, a 15-year-old African lion at the Cameron Park Zoo was euthanized on Friday. Sam Jack was being treated for advanced kidney disease, which had progressed very quickly since the diagnosis in February.

According to the zoo, humane euthanasia was decided because of his poor prognosis and decreased quality of life because of the kidney disease. Sam Jack has been at Cameron Park Zoo since 1999.

He was named after former Waco Mayor, Sam Jack McGlasson whose widow donated and helped raise the money to construct the African Lion Habitat.

Sam Jack was born at Knoxville Zoo on March 27,1998 to his mother, Sylvan, who is still alive in Knoxville. Sam Jack fathered six cubs and is also the grandfather to five cubs who are at the Birmingham Zoo.

Zoo officials say Sam Jack was a colorful character at the zoo.

Cameron Park Zoo Curator of Programs and Exhibits, Terri Cox, says she received a call from Earl Harrison House Managers asking if Sam Jack could be put inside at night.

They were holding an event and they could hear him roaring from their gardens. Cox replied that he was inside, but his roar was so loud it can be heard through the concrete walls of his night-house.
