Central Texas Farmers Off to a Good Start With a Little More Rain

Posted:

Central Texas farmers are off to a good start for this years crop season. It has been better than the last few years, but they need one ingredient to finish strong: rain.

If we get a few more showers throughout the area, this season will turn into a good one.

"These little showers we've had, have been worth millions of dollars," said Gene Hall of the Texas Farmers Bureau.

Its been an interesting start to the farm season. Central Texas farmers have been lucky to receive the amount of rain we've seen in the area, which is an entirely different scenario from a few years ago.

Hall hasn't seen a drought as bad as the one in 2011

"Last summer wasn't too bad," said Hall. "2011 was pretty epic, and I've been in his job for 35 years. I've never seen anything like it."

Now agriculture in the area is recovering, according to the income from sales of agriculture commodities in McLennan County.

To list a few, in 2012 the income from corn was at $24.2 million dollars, which was up from $10.2 million dollars in 2011. Wheat came in at $13.8 million dollars, which was up from $11.4 million dollars in 2011.

"We still need a little more rain to finish this off," Hall said.

Rodney Schmalriede is a McGregor area farmer, and he's pleased with the season so far.

"For the corn, it's pretty much pollinated and we need a little moisture to finish up to get a nice kernel instead of really small ones," Schmalriede said.

Schmalriede harvests milo, corn, oats and wheat mainly. Just like all the farmers, he remains fairly optimistic.

"We need a little more rain and not so much hot temperatures and some cloudy days," said Schmalriede.

While crops may turn out great this year with the help of more rain, the drought in Texas is still far from being over.
