KILLEEN--

Highway 190 near Fort Hood and Clear Creek Road over that highway are open again after being shut down for hours this afternoon because of an accident.

The bed of a dump truck lifted and struck the Clear Creek Bridge around 1 P.M. and left traffic at a stand still for miles.

At the time of the accident, the 18-wheeler was hauling gravel and other construction material when the dump bed of the truck unintentionally began to lift striking the top of the bridge. The gravel from the truck bed was then tossed up onto the Clear Creek Road overpass, as well as onto U.S. 190.

Ken Roberts, spokesperson for the Texas Department of Transportation's Waco District, said that the accident could have been much worse.

"With a portion of the load actually being spread on the bridge, there could have been vehicles crossing the bridge that could have been impacted by the material thrown from the bed of the truck," Roberts said. "Someone could have been injured or killed, so there's any number of factors that could have made the situation much worse."

Bridge engineers were at the scene shortly after the accident and they don't believe any major structural damage was caused.

The Texas Department of Transportation believes that the bridge could be repaired as early as next week.
