Belton wants to revise their street naming policy

BELTON, TX (KXXV) -

The Street Naming Committee will present two alterations to the current street naming policy for the city of Belton.

The first possible change is to count non-responsive homeowners as neutral. The second possible change is to keep the current street name if 50% of homeowners are against the street name change.

"Property owners are fairly protective of their streets and their names, because they have been there for a long time and it's meaningful to them," explains Larry Guess, a Street Naming Committee member.

The committee and policy was formed after a group approached city council about renaming a street after Martin Luther King. After two failed attempts over a year long span, City Council has found the current policy to be too strict.

Belton is one of the few cities in Central Texas that does not have a street named after Martin Luther King Jr.
