Waco pilots new USPS package tracking program

WEST, TX (KXXV) -

People in the Waco area can now track their post office packages using real-time technology.

Local US Postal Service carriers were given cell phones last week.  The phones are linked to scanners.

The combined technology lets customers view up-to-date package information online while carriers are out on their routes.

Waco is on of a few Texas cities chosen to test this device.

Waco postmaster Kenneth Ruelas says, "We want to continue to be the premier provider of package delivery and to continue to do that, we need to provide our customers with real time information."

There is no charge for the service and the postmaster says the new technology is already budgeted for so it shouldn't impact postage rates.

The rest of the state can expect to have access to real-time tracking in the coming months.
