Campus gun bill moves forward, Granbury Senator reacts

A bill that would let students with concealed handgun licenses keep guns in their cars on college campuses is just one signature away from becoming law.

Granbury Senator Brian Birdwell authored a bill that would have let CHL holders have guns on campus.  That bill was quickly shot down.

But the Texas Legislature passed this measure after democrats were assured that it would only allow guns to be kept in cars.

Under current law, universities can post a sign prohibiting guns. But this measure overrides that.

Supporters say it simply extends current faculty rights to students.

Although he's disappointed that his bill did not pass, Senator Birdwell is definitely pleased that this one is making its way to the Governor's desk.

He says, "My duty as a legislator is to be informed of our constitutional rights and protect those. And that's exactly what I'm trying to do with both of these issues and these respective bills."

Some people oppose having concealed guns on campus.  They say they can be disruptive and dangerous.

Governor Rick Perry is expected to sign the bill allowing licensed students to keep guns in their guns in their cars into law.
