WISD approves changes to school rezoning plan

Posted:

The Waco ISD trustees voted to amend a redistricting plan they just passed last month. The original plan made changes to school attendance zones at every level.

Waco ISD spokesman Dale Caffey says rezoning is frustrating but necessary.

"We know that sometimes redrawing attendance zones can be aggravating but we also have some schools that are over crowded and some that are under utilized. So what we're trying to do is balance out the numbers the best way we can," said Caffey.

The changes made to elementary schools redistricting will remain the same. Students at an overfull bells hill elementary will still be rezoned to West Avenue Elementary where there is more room.

Last months plan also split up the south Waco zone and split students into two different middle schools.

"Under the plan that was approved in April South Waco elementary begins to feed into two middle schools, Carver in the northern part of Waco and Caesar Chavez in the southern part of Waco," said Caffey.

Many parents in South Waco say the new zones will be a problem when their kids reach high school and tonight the board agreed.

Caffey says, "Upon looking at it further at the high school level, it puts hardship we believe on children living in south Waco who would then be bussed all the way across town to Waco high when in fact university is a lot closer."

The board approved the revisions made to the new plan so students from south Waco elementary will feed into Caesar Chavez middle school and then ultimately university high.

Some of the student's spent years at one of the rezoned elementary schools will be allowed grandfathered transfers.

WISD spokesman also said another reason they want to even out the high schools is because if University becomes overcrowded there will be less room for students from A. J. Moore Academy to apply.
