Drowning in Lake Waco at Twin Bridges Park

A family is in mourning after a local man drowns in Lake Waco at Twin Bridges Park Sunday evening. An onlooker called police just after 5:00 p.m. about a distressed swimmer.

24 year-old Christopher Nil Lansford went underwater and never emerged. Waco police say Lansford, his wife and their friend were floating on the lake minutes before.

"We had three people on a raft and they were going from one area of the shore [and] at one point one of the ladies fell off the raft but were able to get back on and they floated back over here to the shore."

That's when police say Lansford tried to swim, instead of taking the raft back across the lake to get their vehicle so he could go pick up his wife and their friend. Within minutes he began to struggle to stay afloat.

"It was just a matter of couple of minutes that we, from the time that we had messaged that he had gone into the water that he had not surfaced."

Waco Fire Department, the Texas Game Warden and Corps of Engineers searched a portion of the lake for more than hour before they were able to recover his body. Justice of the peace William Peterson later pronounced him dead.

Lansford's wife and their friend are physically ok but no doubt they're both reeling from their loss.
