Ed Graf's bond set at $1.5 million

MCLENNAN COUNTY -

A man convicted of killing two children has a bond set pending a new trial.

Ed Graf Jr. was convicted in 1988 of killing his two step-sons by burning them in a backyard storage shed. 25 years later, he's going to trial again after a Criminal Appeals court ruled the scientific evidence used to convict Graf has been proven false.

Graf had a hearing Friday in the 54th District Court of McLennan County to decide a bond pending the trial. Both the state and defense called on witnesses with Graf's brother testifying his family could post a $100,000 bond and provide a place for Graf to live. The state also called on Clare Bradburn, Graf's ex-wife and the victims' mother, who testified she would fear for her safety and others if Graf were released pending trial.

Judge Matt Johnson set Graf's bond at $1.5 million. As of late Friday afternoon Graf was still in jail and had not posted bond.

"We are pleased with Judge Johnson's ruling regarding the bond. Over twenty-six years ago, the lives of two little boys were tragically ended. Changes in fire science caused Ed Graf's case to come back to McLennan County. It is my honor to continue to seek justice for the boys," McLennan County DA Abel Reyna said in a release Friday.

Graf's attorney Walter M. Reaves Jr. asked the court to consider appointing Graf an attorney. That's because he had been representing Graf pro bono and was not prepared to continue doing so through the new trial he sought for Graf.

The 54th District Court says they will consider that proposal. The court also says the next hearing has not been set, and will not happen until Graf has been appointed an attorney.
