Former soldier holds two hour standoff with law enforcement

A former solider with a history of post-traumatic stress disorder held a standoff with law enforcement for more than two hours. The standoff began around noon on Wednesday in a home on Willbanks Rd.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Matt Cawthon says the former soldier believed he was seeing Iraqis, and had visions of himself being back in Iraq. The man barricaded himself in a house with a woman whom he had just met the day before online.

McLennan County Sheriff's Office investigator, James Pack, managed to talk to the man on the phone. After lengthy negotiations, Pack was able to convince the former solider into letting the woman leave.

At around 2 p.m. the former solder eventually gave himself up to authorities.

The incident ended peacefully, and the man was transported to a facility in Waco for evaluation. A nearby Hallsburg school was locked down as a precaution during the standoff.

The former soldier's name has not been released.
