Mengden Named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week
The A&M sophomore was honored for his dominant performance against the No. 3 LSU Tigers.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M sophomore Daniel Mengden was tabbed SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Mengden was honored for his performance in the series opener against the No. 3 LSU Tigers. He shared the pitcher of the week honor with Ole Miss' junior Mike Mayers.
The Houston, Texas-native posted his second consecutive 8.0-inning, one-run effort, holding LSU's prolific offense to five hits. He struck out five Tigers and didn't issue a walk, coming out on the winning end of a 2-1 decision for the second straight week. He cruised through much of the game with four 1-2-3 innings and three four-batter frames. Mengden also went 2-for-7 (.286) with one home run in two games at the plate on the week.
In his 13 starts on the season, Mengden is 6-3 with a 2.01 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 89.1 innings of work. He ranks ninth in the SEC in ERA and fifth in opponent batting average at .192. In SEC play, he ranks seventh with a 2.01 ERA and fourth with a .194 opponent batting average. At the plate, Mengden is hitting .275 with two doubles, two triples, three home runs and 14 RBI in 33 games.
Mengden became the first-ever Aggie to earn SEC Pitcher of the Week distinction. Matt Kent, Hunter Melton and Jonathan Moroney have all earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors once this season.
Texas A&M returns to action on Tuesday with a 6:35 pm contest against the UTPA Broncs on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
