Baylor MBB Adds Al Freeman to Signing Class

6-foot-4 guard is fourth top-100 national recruit in Bears' 2013 class

WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball has signed Al Freeman to a Financial Aid Contract for the 2013-14 season, head coach Scott Drew announced Friday.

Freeman, a 6-foot-4 guard from Charlotte, N.C., joins four other recruits to give the Bears one of the nation's best recruiting classes. He's ranked among the nation's top 100 recruits by every major recruiting site and is tabbed as high as No. 62 nationally and No. 15 at his position by Scout.com.

"Al is not only a talented offensive player, but he also takes great pride on the defensive end of the floor," Drew said. "He's a very versatile player who can do a lot of things well. Baylor Nation will also really enjoy getting to know him because he is an outstanding young man."

With Freeman's addition, Baylor's 2013 signing class is now ranked No. 13 nationally by ESPN.com. He joins top-100 high school recruits Johnathan Motley (Houston, Texas), Ishmail Wainright (Raytown, Mo.) and Dominic Woodson (Round Rock, Texas), as well as junior college transfer Kenny Chery (Montreal, Canada).

Freeman will join the Bears out of Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev. He led the Pilots to a 35-1 record, including a 54-game winning streak, and the NHSI semifinals as a senior in 2012-13. Freeman's team finished the season ranked No. 3 nationally in the USATODAY Super 25.

Freeman signed an NLI with UCLA in November, but he was granted a release after the Bruins made a coaching change. Prior to spending his senior year at Findlay Prep, Freeman played at Charlotte's Olympic High School. He also played for the USA 2013 Red team at the 2012 Adidas Nations tournament.

"Our staff began recruiting Al in his freshman year of high school," Drew said. "He is a great teammate and loves to win. There is no doubt the competition he has faced throughout his high school experience has prepared him for college basketball."

Baylor returns three starters from the 2013 NIT Championship team that finished 23-14. With the returns of potential All-Americans Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin, Drew's 2014 squad has been ranked in the nation's top 20 in numerous projections.
