Police find illegal auto chop shop, arrest suspect for theft

Posted:
WACO -

A 25-year-old man has been arrested for theft after police found him driving in a stolen vehicle early Thursday morning. The incident began after midnight, and led police to the discovery of an illegal auto chop shop in the 3900 block of N. 20th St.

Police were initially informed about a stolen vehicle in the North Waco area. The victim saw several people stealing his car and gave chase. A third vehicle attempted to intervene during the chase, and kept the victim from catching up to his stolen car.

The suspects eventually abandoned the stolen car, but police were able to follow the intervening vehicle to the illegal auto chop shop. Police later learned that the intervening vehicle, a black Ford Mustang, was stolen previously in the Waco area and had fictitious plates on it.

After an investigation, police identified Rodolfo Cruz as the driver of the intervening vehicle. He was arrested and charged with two counts of theft.

Authorities recovered three stolen vehicles and various car parts such as doors, hoods, bumpers, engines, transmissions and heavy tools from the scene.

Police continue to investigate the incident, and say that additional arrests may occur in the future.
