Waco ISD and Waco Transit team up to get students to school

Waco Independent School District and the Waco Transit System have teamed up to help get students to school. The school district hopes this partnership will help boost school attendance and solve transportation issues that some students face.

All Waco ISD middle and high school students have been offered free transportation to any
school-related destination. David Ellis, Supervisor of the Waco ISD Attendance, Truancy, and Dropout Recovery & Prevention Program, said the program has already logged several hundred student rides so far.

"We are thinking out of the box about ways we can improve attendance at Waco ISD," Ellis said."If students miss the bus or their family has car problems, many end up staying
at home, and thus, miss valuable instruction time."

The free bus ride is only valid for school related activities such as riding to and from school or school-related destinations during the school day. If the program is successful, they plan on implementing the program next school year.

The pilot program began at the beginning of May and will run through June 6.
