139-year-old Belton church faces possible destruction

Belton has given one of Bell County's oldest churches five months to raise money to restore the building, or else it will be torn down.

It has been five years since the city has been presented with the idea of restoring the old church, but the cost of restoration is around $300,000.

A wall has fallen down, parts of the roof have blown off and the foundation is a safety hazard. Neighboring businesses would like to see the church torn down, but advocates for the church want to save the old building.

Belton Public Information Officer Paul Romer says, "We put an emphasis on historic buildings and preserving them, and that's kind of why this has been going on for five years. We believe there is some utility in this building, and this group believes that as well."

The city has suggested turning the old building into a genealogy center or a parking lot. The church has been around since 1874, but has not been in use since the 1970's.
