Determination for cause of fire at West Fertilizer Co. pushed back

WEST, TX (KXXV) -

The State Fire Marshal's Office won't meet its own deadline to determine a cause for the West fire and explosion.

The target date to determine the cause of the fire was set last week for May 10th. Now investigators are aiming for 1 to 2 weeks beyond May 10th.

The State Fire Marshal's Office and the ATF are heading a group of more than 60 investigators trying to find some answers. So far, the two agencies have developed over 200 leads and conducted more than 400 interviews.

Investigators do know the fire was in the fertilizer and seed building and ammonium nitrate did detonate. However, how the explosion was initiated is still unknown.

The following causes for the initial fire have been eliminated:

Weather or natural causes, anhydrous ammonium, railcars containing ammonium nitrate, and a fire within the ammonium nitrate bin.

Water used from fire fighters to try to extinguish the initial fire did not contribute to the cause of the explosion. The deaths of the first responders will continue to be investigated.
