Recovery center opens in West after plant blast

WEST, Texas (AP) - Dozens of people have visited a newly opened disaster recovery center in a Central Texas town where a fertilizer plant explosion claimed 14 lives.

Teams with the Federal Emergency Management Agency also canvassed damaged neighborhoods in West to provide help.

FEMA spokeswoman Susan Solomon said Monday that nearly 80 people have visited the center in a Pointwest Bank building since the site opened Saturday.

Experts are trying to determine what sparked the fiery April 17 explosion in West, located about 70 miles south of Fort Worth. About 200 people were hurt and dozens of structures were damaged or destroyed.

The recovery center will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT until further notice. Solomon says staffers from state and federal agencies are available to help.
