Local greenhouse for veterans with PTSD holds grand opening

WACO, TX (KXXV) -

A local greenhouse built to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder held its grand opening Friday.

The 1-year-old Horticulture Center was made possible by the Vets Helping Vets organization and the Veteran's Association. They have veterans come in and volunteer at the greenhouse in Waco.

Officials say getting veterans to come to the greenhouse and working on the plants can have very positive effects.

"They see their buddies, they see death and destruction 24/7. They can't turn it off when I get them out here to do things with their hands, I give them a little piece of vacation from their PTSD," Tom Hughes of Vets Helping Vets said.

Flowers, vegetables and spices are all planted and sold at the greenhouse. It's open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
