Man attempts to flee from police, charged with endangering child

Waco police have arrested a man who attempted to flee from authorities with a small child. The incident happened early Wednesday evening at the intersection of Imperial Dr. and Loop 340.

Police say an officer made a traffic stop on a car and attempted to identify the driver. During the identification process, the driver, Troy James Douglas, sped off in his vehicle.

The officer went back into his car and began pursing the suspect. The officer later found that the fleeing driver had wrecked his car and got it stuck on a culvert behind the Hollywood Theater.

Douglas was seen fleeing from the wrecked car on foot while carrying a small child with him. Police saw them enter a nearby wooded area, and were concerned about the safety of the child, so they set up a perimeter around the area.

Police brought out a K-9 unit and enlisted the help of a helicopter in the search. Douglas was found a short time later and taken into custody. He and the child were both taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center to be checked out.

CPS was then contacted to take custody of the child. Authorities later discovered that CPS had been looking for Douglas in order to take custody of that child and one other.

Douglas was taken to the McLennan County Jail on charges of evading arrest and endangering a child.
