Man arrested after trying to take weapon from trooper

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper arrested a man who attempted to take the trooper's weapon during a traffic stop. The incident happened at 10:23 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and an Interstate 35 service road.

The female driver of the suspect vehicle was taken into custody for driving while intoxicated and was cooperative with the trooper. The trooper determined that the passenger in the vehicle, Mike Joseph Alvarado, had outstanding arrest warrants out of Waco and TSTC.

When the trooper tried to take Alvarado into custody, he fled on foot.

As the foot pursuit continued, the trooper deployed a Taser twice, but Alvarado failed to comply. DPS spokesman DL Wilson said at one point Alvarado tried to take the Taser away. The trooper used his baton and the subject complied.

Alvarado was taken into custody, and is now facing additional charges of felony evading arrest, taking a weapon from an officer and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
