Perry Wants Apology Over Newspaper Cartoon

by Bruce Gietzen

AUSTIN - Several Texas lawmakers are outraged and disappointed over a political cartoon in a California newspaper.

The Sacrament Bee editorial cartoon shows Governor Rick Perry crowing that "Business is Booming".  He's also flanked by panels that say "Low Tax" and "Low Regs".

The next panel reads "Boom!" as an explosion engulfs the area behind Perry.

A fire and explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas last week killed 15 people and injured nearly 200 others.

The Associated Press says Governor Perry wrote a letter to the Bee's editor Friday demanding an apology, and saying he would not stand for "someone mocking this tragedy."  He also called the cartoon a "detestable attempt at satire."

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst joined the debate, calling for the firing of the artists, political cartoonist Jack Ohman.

We contacted the Sacrament Bee tonight and Editorial Page Editor Stuart Leavenworth sent us this statement:

"Jack Ohman's cartoon of April 25 made a strong statement about Governor Rick Perry's disregard for worker safety, and his attempts to market Texas as a place where industries can thrive with few regulations.

It is unfortunate that Gov. Perry and some on the blogosphere have attempted to interpret the cartoon as being disrespectful for the victims of this tragedy.

As Ohman has made clear on his blog, he has complete empathy for the victims and people living by the plant.  What he finds offensive is a governor who would gamble with the lives of families by not pushing for the strongest safety regulations.

Perry's letter is an attempt to distract people from that message."

Out of respect to firefighters in West and their families, we are not showing the cartoon to you, but you can see it by going to the Sacramento Bee's website:
