West veteran and family surprised with new home

Posted:
WACO -

A veteran and his family who lost their home in the West explosion got a big surprise Monday. Scott and Mary Burgess got the keys to a fully furnished home in far west Waco.

Premier Realtors joined forces with the Veterans Administration to get the home ready.

Burgess says they'd talked about someday moving closer to his work in Waco, but he says it's hard leaving behind so many friends in West who are hurting. The Burgesses and their two sons are grateful for their new home.

"The outpouring support and caring of people and love that everyone has shown especially people you don't even know. It's overwhelming. It's amazing," Scott Burgess said.

The 2,400 square foot home is in the D.R. Horton subdivision off Bagby Avenue near Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

Both the Burgesses were released from the hospital two days after the explosion.
