Vigil held for West explosion victims at St. Mary's Catholic Church

Hundreds gather for a second time at St. Mary's Catholic Church in West for a vigil.

Bishop Joe S. Vasquez from Roman Catholic Diocese in Austin assisted in leading the church in prayer. He discussed how the tight nit community can come together and move forward. He says since the fallen sacrificed themselves, the least they can do is honor them.

"There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends," explains Vasquez. "Here is some people who are willing to lay down their lives, they don't even know these people, but they were willing to lay down their lives for others."

Neighbors mourned over the devastating explosion that has disrupted their community. Sgt. Reyes announced today that 14 people have died, and more than 200 were injured.

We spoke to Annette Cook, who lost her childhood friend, Buck Uptmor, from the explosion. He was one of the fire fighters to respond to the initial fire. She says hearing she lost her friend is horrible, but he died trying to help others.

"I knew he'd be right there, because that's Buck. He was always there to help everybody else. He's just one of those people," said Cook.

Those injured were also in attendance, as the community surrounded them with support and love.
