Baylor Baseball's Cal Towey Named Big 12 Player of the Week

Senior garners honor for second time of season, career

IRVING, Texas – Baylor's Cal Towey was named Big 12 Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.  The senior third baseman garnered the honor for the second time of his career and season, and is the fourth such award for the Bears in 2013.

Towey provided late-inning heroic game-winning homers for two Baylor wins as he drove in seven runs in four games last week.  His complete stat line includes hitting .286 with 11 total bases, four walks, three runs scored, two home runs and a double.

Against UT Arlington last Tuesday, Towey went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two walks, one run and double.  On Friday versus No. 8 Oklahoma, he was 1-for-4 and hit a walk-off home run for a 2-1 win.  On Sunday against the Sooners, he was 1-for-3 with four RBI and two walks as he hit a game-winning grand slam to put Baylor up by two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Towey leads Baylor with six game-winning RBI hits this season and the homers were his second and third career game-winning homers (May 23, 2010 vs. Oklahoma State).  The grand slam was the first of his career and first by a Baylor player since Max Muncy against Rice on March 6, 2011.

The Seattle, Wash. native also earned the conference's weekly award on March 4 this season after hitting .500 (7-for-14) with 11 total bases, eight RBI, four runs, three walks, two doubles and a triple while slugging .786 and posting a .611 on-base percentage.  His performance at the 2013 Astros Foundation College Classic that weekend earned him the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honor after going 6-for-10 with six RBI and four runs.

For the season, Towey leads the team with 35 RBI, 10 doubles and three triples.  His RBI total ranks second in the Big 12 and 58th in the NCAA.  In Big 12 play, he leads in total bases (29) and ranks second in triples (2), walks (8) and RBI (12), third in homers (2) and slugging percentage (.659), sixth in hits (17) and on-base percentage (.481) and ninth in batting average (.386).

Baylor's two other Big 12 weekly honorees this season are Grayson Porter (April 1) and Max Garner (March 4).

Towey and the Bears (19-17, 7-4 Big 12) hit the road for their next five games after ending a season-long home stand with an 8-3 record.  First up is a trip to San Marcos, Texas to take on Texas State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
