Canion Grand In Baylor's 1-0 Win Over Oklahoma State

Posted:

WACO - Great pitching continued to be on display at Getterman Stadium as Whitney Canion fanned 13 batters en route to a 1-0 win for No. 16 Baylor (32-10, 5-5) on Saturday afternoon over Oklahoma State (24-19, 2-6). The crowd of 1,248 was the second-highest of the year and 18th highest all-time.

"Whitney really took control of the game," head coach Glenn Moore said. "This was a classic Oklahoma State/Baylor game. I thought our at-bats were better than what the result was. We hit the ball hard, but I would like us to pick it up a bit tomorrow."

Canion (17-6) earned the win, giving up only two hits and walking just two to go along with the 13 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. It marked the redshirt juniors sixth double-digit strikeout performance of the year.

Kelsi Kettler collected the Lady Bears' lone hit, a shot down the left field line in the second with one out.

Baylor swiped three bases on the day, including the 30th of the year for Kathy Shelton. The senior tied her 2011 mark for fifth on the single-season steals list in program history.

The lone run of the game came in the first, as Shelton and Kaitlyn Thumann were each hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. With one out, the duo took off on a double steal, each sliding in safely, but a mishandled ball by the shortstop at third led to Shelton crossing home plate for the 1-0 lead. Sara Smith drew a one-out walk to place runners on the corners, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

The Cowgirls led off the top of the first with a single, but a lineout and caught stealing at second led to a pair of quick outs before Canion got a strikeout to end it.

Canion struck out three batters in an inning on three different occasions, including the second, after allowing a leadoff walk.

After collecting two quick outs in the third, Canion walked a batter and saw a slow-rolling single to second put runners on first and second, but the lefty blew one past Ettinger to end the top half of the frame.

Having already clinched the series, the Lady Bears will go for the sweep on Sunday with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
