Obi Named Big 12 Athlete of the Week

Freshman won Florida Relays triple jump title to secure conference honor.

 IRVING, Texas – Following a victory in the triple jump at the Florida Relays, Baylor track and field freshman Felix Obi has been named the Big 12 Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

 Obi recorded the second-best triple jump in school history with a leap of 51-6.5 [15.71m] on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., to take first in a 16-person field.

 He is the first Baylor male athlete to be honored with an outdoor league honor since Trey Harts won the award on April 21, 2009.

 Obi, an El Paso, Texas, native, has already set the outdoor school record twice this season in the event. His season-best jump of 52-9.25 [16.08], earned him fourth at the Texas Relays and is currently the fourth-best leap in the NCAA this season.

 Obi joins Tiffani McReynolds as Bears to be honored by the Big 12 in 2013. The senior hurdler was awarded the accolade during the indoor season on Jan. 29.

 Baylor has now had five male athletes honored seven times over 11 years of the outdoor award's existence. Obi joins Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson, who both won the award twice, while Chris Gowell and Trey Harts each received recognition once.

 Baylor will be back on the track this weekend as the squad heads back to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Invitational on Saturday.
