Elm Mott man accused of shining light at DPS helicopter

An Elm Mott man has been arrested for shining a high intensity light at an aircraft.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday night when the Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter was flying in the area on another call. The pilot was temporarily blinded by an extremely bright light being directed from the ground.

The pilot managed to retain control of the aircraft, though DPS spokesman DL Wilson says sensitive equipment on the helicopter could have been overloaded.

Two nearby troopers on the ground were able to confront the man within minutes, and the pilot was able to shine his own high intensity light towards the suspected location of the offense.

Troopers arrested 52-year-old Martin Robert Henson in the 120 block of Harper Street in a trailer park. He was then transported to the McLennan County Jail.

Wilson says that it is extremely hazardous to shine lights or laser pointers at an aircraft because it could cause the pilot to become disoriented and could cause a crash. It could not only be a threat to the pilot, but the safety of people on the ground as well.
