Bell County Sheriff's Office introduces new sex crimes division

A new division that will deal with sex crimes and human trafficking was formally introduced by the Bell County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday.

The Special Crimes Unit was created to help analyze sex offender registration. The Bell County Sheriff's Office says close to 400 sex offenders have registered over the last 20 years.

Chief Deputy Chuck Cox says it is getting hard to track sex offenders and believes the new unit will solve that issue.

"The sex offender registration has gotten to the point where it is a lot more than just an administrative position with this agency."

Deputy Cox hopes within in the first month, that all sex offenders who are registered in Bell County will be in compliance or incarcerated.

"When a person is off of probation or parole he is no longer under court supervision," Cox said. "The only line defense between the person and the public is the law enforcement agency that has him registered."
