Economic impact of child abuse

Child abuse is more than just a social issue and many people never stop to think about the economic impact it has on society.

Michelle Carter is the Director of the Children's Advocacy Center and says the economic side is often overlooked.

"I think a lot of time when we think about abuse, we want to think about children and how they're hurting or things that are done to them, and I believe that the economic impact is just often over sited because people aren't realistic about the expenditures that are related to these situations," said Carter.

In Bell County alone, more than 421 abused kids were taken into foster care last year, costing the county more than six-million dollars.

More than 150 children were removed from their homes in McLennan County costing nearly five-million dollars and 99 children were taken into foster care in Coryell County costing them almost one-million dollars.

"If these kids don't get proper intervention and aren't able to heel from their trauma, they will go on to have higher rates of mental illness, higher rates of juvenile and adult crime, again, all of which are taxing on our society economically," said Carter.

The month of April is recognized across the nations as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.
