KILLEEN -

A woman is in custody after leading police on an early morning pursuit and crashing her vehicle into an apartment building. The crash happened after 3 a.m. in the 2700 block of Lake Rd. Monday morning.

Police initially received a call about a female breaking the windows of a home in the 2000 block of Coach Dr. When police arrived, the female drove away in a white Chevy Malibu and fled south on Coach Dr.

Officers attempted to stop her, but she continued to drive away. Officers pursued the suspect as she turned off her headlights on the vehicle and continued onto Shoemaker Dr.

Police say the suspect drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Lake Rd. and Shoemaker Dr. She then drove the vehicle into an apartment building located on the 2700 block of Lake Road.

The front of the car ignited into flames causing one of the apartment units to catch fire. The female suspect was pinned in the vehicle, but officers were able to remove her before the fire reached into the cab. She was transported to the Scott and White Memorial Hospital with a broken ankle.

The people who were inside the apartment unit during the crash were not injured. All other occupants of the apartment building were removed safely and without injury. Police say 16 residents were displaced, and the American Red Cross is helping them.

The Killeen Fire Department were able to extinguish the fire in approximately 15 minutes. Police have not released the name of the suspect at this time.
