Waco ISD holds first job fair in two years

During the time when most school districts are laying people off one local district held a job fair Saturday, drawing educators from across the country. Waco ISD is looking to fill 150 positions from the elementary level to high school.

Educators and prospective teachers came from all over the state and as far away as Chicago for the job fair.

Many of the applicants had already been cleared for work by WISD so all they had to do was turn in their applications, snag an interview and they could be hired right then and there.

Andreia Foster, Principal of West Avenue Elementary said she's been able to hire people from past job fairs. "I've been able to hire applicants through the job fair before but not actually on the spot. So that is an advantage that I do believe we have," said Foster.

Despite many school districts having to make cuts and freeze hiring, Waco ISD is reestablishing their annual job fair after a two year hiatus.

By having the job fair this early, Waco ISD ensures they get first pick at the pool of teachers.

WISD Superintendent Bonny Cain says the turnout shows how excited people are to be part of the district.

"Everyone's heard what a turn around effort we're making and how we have gone from a low performing district and we're going to be one of the highest performing districts in the state and everybody wants to be a part of that," said CAIN.
